Herbal Remedies for Cold & Flu Season

Since it's cold and flu season, we like to take measures into out own hands to boost our immunity and keep our staff healthy. Here are several of our favorite easy-to-make recipes that we keep onhand to get through the season of sniffles!
Homemade Elderberry Syrup
This recipe is a powerful cold preventative & remedy that is easy to make. Use the following instructions & enjoy!
Ingredients:
*2 cups dried organic Elderberries
*6 cups cold water (distilled, purified, or spring water works best)
*2-3 tsp. fresh grated ginger root
*1 organic sweet cinnamon stick
*1 cup raw, local honey @beekindhoney (or organic maple syrup or agave for a vegan/infant-friendly recipe); double the amount of sweetener to increase shelf life
Directions:
1. Combine Elderberries, Fresh Ginger and Cinnamon stick with cold water in pot and bring to a boil
2. Reduce heat and allow herbs to simmer 30 to 40 minutes.
3. Remove from heat and let steep 1 hour
4. Press elderberries while in the pan with a masher to get all medicinal value from the Elderberries. Strain Elderberries, ginger and cinnamon stick using a fine mesh strainer and cheesecloth or undyed cotton muslin bag. Wring cheesecloth to get any remaining liquid
5. While liquid is still warm, but almost cool, add honey and whisk
6. Bottle and store in fridge!
Traditional Fire Cider Recipe
Fire Cider has many benefits including; boosting immunity, aiding with digestion, clearing sinuses and warming you up on a cold day! To use Fire Cider you can take it as a shot, mix into hot water as a tea, make salad dressing or even use as a sauté for veggies and meat!
Ingredients:
*1/4 cup Fresh Horseradish, grated
*1/8 cup Garlic; finely chopped
*1/2 cup Onion: finely chopped
*1/4 cup Fresh Ginger: grated
*Cayenne to taste
*Organic Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar
*Local Honey to taste
Directions:
1. Grate and chop ingredients
2. Place in a 2 pint glass mason jar and just cover all ingredients with vinegar
3. Let sit for 4 weeks, shaking twice a day. Keep an eye that all ingredients are covered with vinegar. If not, add a bit more vinegar
4. Strain and add honey to taste
